Pregnancy Dental Advice

Posted on

If you just found out that you are pregnant, then you want to make sure you follow these helpful dental tips, so you keep your teeth healthier and prevent other issues from coming up.

Always let the dentist know you are pregnant – When you go to see the dentist when you are pregnant, it is extremely important for you to let them know right away that you are pregnant. There are certain precautions they will need to take if they need to give you x-rays during your dental exam. They will also be able to give you other important tips and advice to help with your teeth while you are pregnant.

Ask about extra dental cleanings – Your dentist may prefer that you come in more often than you normally would for some extra cleanings while you are pregnant, so make sure to talk with them about this and see what their recommendations are.

Use a bland flavored toothpaste – When you are pregnant, strong flavors can be all it takes to kick your morning sickness into full-gear. This is why you should use bland flavored toothpaste, at least while you are at the point of pregnancy where morning sickness is a concern for you.

Be extra mindful about watching for signs of gingivitis – When you are pregnant, you are at an increased risk of developing gingivitis. Watch for possible signs of the condition that can come in the form of puffy gums, red gums, sensitive teeth, and bleeding when you brush your teeth.

Find replacements for sugar cravings – If you are craving a lot of sweets during your pregnancy, you want to find some healthy replacements that help with the cravings while preventing you from consuming so much sugar. Fresh fruits can help with some of those sugar cravings. Also, cheese can help to fend off strong cravings for chocolate.

Get the proper amount of vitamins – Your doctor will more than likely put you on a prenatal vitamin. However, you also want to talk with your dentist to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin C and Vitamin B12 throughout your pregnancy since these help to keep your teeth healthy.

Do not skip on brushing and flossing – Whether you are dealing with morning sickness or you just have a lot going on, you want to be sure you are keeping up with your brushing and flossing. You may need to adjust the times of day when you brush to help, but you need to stay on top of it.
