4 Things You Might Not Know About Dental Implants

Posted on

Dental implants are probably the best alternatives to natural teeth. However, many people still do not fully appreciate dental implants or understand them. Below are some things you should know about dental implants.

1. You Won't Feel the Implants

You might worry about feeling dental implants in your mouth. Luckily, that worry proves false once you get the implants because the implants don't have any taste or smell. You will not even feel the implants because the bone that supports the implants doesn't have nerve receptors.

The lack of feeling, taste, and smell means you don't have to worry about your food or drinks tasting strange because you have implants. Your sense of taste may even improve after your dental treatment. After some time, you may even forget that you have implants instead of natural teeth.

2. The Implants May or May Not Trigger Security Metal Detectors

Many implants won't trigger alarms when you go through metal detectors at security checkpoints, such as airport scanners. For example, many security scanners use magnetic fields to detect metals. However, titanium implants are not magnetic, and the magnetic fields won't detect them.

Even dental implants with trace metals that can trigger metal detectors, such as Zirconia, rarely do so. The implants have small amounts of metal. Even if a scanner does detect your implants, the authorities will quickly know about the implant, and you won't suffer any consequences.

3. Some Implants Come with Prosthetic Gums

Some dental problems that affect teeth and necessitate extraction also affect the gums. For example, periodontitis may trigger gum recession. With gum recession, your artificial tooth might not look natural after dental implant treatment. For this reason, some implants include prosthetic gum that fits above the gum ridge and gives you a natural-looking gum line.

4. You Won't Ever Need Endodontic Treatment with Dental Implants

Endodontic or root canal treatment is the preferred treatment for teeth with infected roots. Many people fear endodontic treatment even though many who undergo the procedure don't feel too much pain and only have to deal with some soreness or numbness after treatment.

However, you won't have to worry about endodontic treatment once you get a dental implant. The endodontic treatment removes the infection from natural teeth roots. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that isn't infected.

Natural teeth are the best, but dental implants are the next best alternative for those who cannot keep their natural teeth. Contact a dentist to learn more about dental implants.
